CPWR program leads to successful BAC Apprenticeships for Flint Residents
Supported through funding from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), The Center for Construction Research and Training’s (CPWR) Environmental Career Worker Training Program started in June 2016, focusing on responding to Flint, Michigan’s water crisis.
Ten Flint residents were recruited through Michigan Works to receive training in life skills, job readiness, mentoring/career guidance, construction and environmental hazard/construction safety.
The students will also receive training in Lead Awareness, Hazardous Waste Worker and OSHA Outreach training led by experienced CPWR and union apprenticeship instructors.
Local Building Trades partners include Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 2 MI, UA Local 370 Plumbers & Pipefitters and Operating Engineers Local 324.
Five of the ten students who graduated from CPWR’s training program were placed in a BAC apprenticeship program.
Nick Sanchez will enter BAC’s Pointing Cleaning Caulking Apprenticeship, Emily Williams and Brandon Clarke will enter BAC’s Refractory Bricklayer Apprenticeship and Anthony & Adrian Sisson will begin BAC’s Bricklayer Apprenticeship program.
The Environmental Career Worker Training Program focuses on delivering comprehensive training to increase the number of disadvantaged and underrepresented minority workers in areas such as environmental restoration, construction, hazardous materials/waste handling and emergency response.
Emily Williams will begin a BAC Refractory Bricklayer Apprenticeship program.
